Message: When I first heard the words "even when the jury and the judge say you have a right to hold a grudge," I immediately thought of my son Dustin, killed by a drunk driver on 8/12/11. The person who killed him was 18. Because it was a hit-and-run with evidence problems, we accepted a plea deal. One of the requirements was that the young man had to meet with me once and write letters every six months. I met him 3 weeks ago in prison and it was amazing for both of us. He is very sorry for what happened, for the loss of Dustin, and wants to make a difference in the lives of other young people. He really needs support and encouragement; I plan on doing all I can to provide this. In the meantime, after dragging Dustin's mangled bike to a public open house on traffic safety in March 2012, I was approached by people wanting to hear our story, so I've been speaking at DUII and High Risk Driver classes 4-5 times per month since April. Dustin's been gone 15 months now and the pain is sometimes unbearable still, but it feels good knowing that maybe we are making a difference in other people's lives. I only learned about your story a few months ago, but it is very inspiring. I'm sorry about the loss of Meagan and Lisa and the many other lives changed that day as well. Thank you for stepping up, for being a public face of forgiveness and love. Hopefully if you can do it, I can, too.

Message: i just wanna start by saying though I may not know you on a personal level .. you are without a doubt one of the strongest people I've EVER met in my 21 years of living. as I sat in the base theatre yeserday morning on Camp Lejuene it took so much not to cry. what your doing is so brave. you touched my heart & i know you impacted alot of my other Marines as well. you being able to travel & take Eric Smallridge along with you is amazing. it is so effective & the fact you could forgive him for something so heartbreaking only proves how much of an amazing woman you really are. I got excited when they introduced you yesterday & said you were from Florida. I'm from Jacksonville, FL myself. Born & raised & my mother works at Florida State Prison so this story had my attention that much more just for those reasons. honestly, I didnt want your presenttation to end .. it was so captivating to me. when we were able to give hugs yesterday i wish it could have been longer. I told my fellow Lance Corporal. .. I dont know how to give this hug & not cry but i kept it together then asked for the letter Eric wrote in prison. I made copies later at work cus I had other Marines wanting them as well. I would love to be able to come again. It was just so amazing. I dont even know how to express it. I just wanna let you know your so awesome & THANK YOU for sharing your story with me & my Marines. I PROMISE NOT TO DRINK & DRIVE .. OORAH!

Message: Rene and Eric, I just wanted to say thank you. You both came and spoke at my Squadron today and shared your story. I just wanted to say Thank you for taking time and coming and talking to us. It was hard to sit there and listen to the story and hold back the tears. Rene, you are an inspiration and you show what true forgiveness is. Also Eric, listening to what you had to say and how it all has affected you hit me and showed me and I am sure many others who were there how a bad decision can ruin someones life. I will keep both of you and your families in my prayers. God bless both of you.
